Handfasting is an ancient Celtic ritual in which the hands are tied together to symbolize the binding of two lives. While it is most often included in Wiccan or Pagan ceremonies, it has become more mainstream and many couples find it an interesting way to express their commitment to one another.
There are a few different ways to put the ritual together – depending on whether you favour the Celtic origins or the Pagan origins; as well as how significant a part you want it play in your ceremony.
Some couples simply want a token gesture, whilst others opt for it to be the main part of their wedding ceremony.
The binding can take several different forms with one of the most popular being cord. It can also be lace or ribbon or plaited wool. I’ve even done one with a dog lead!
It is also a lovely way for others to be involved in the ceremony if you wish.
