Another lockdown in Victoria – you’d think we’d be used to it by now!! But it doesn’t get any easier. In fact, I think in a lot of ways it gets much, much harder.
It is definitely harder for businesses that will lose money this week, money that they will never get back – like restaurants, cafes, bars, etc.
And it’s definitely harder for wedding couples who will also lose money this weekend! Even with the most understanding of industry partners, there is no way that everyone can offer up their services again for free.
Some are in the fortunate position to be able to do this, but most wedding industry professionals are small businesses struggling to make a living doing something they love – as much for the passion and satisfaction, rather than financial security!
For my part, even though I am a full-time professional celebrant, it is not my primary form of income and, like a lot of celebrants, I do this for the joy it brings me, more than for the money.
There is a saying that goes along the lines of “find something you love doing and you’ll never work a day in your life”. Well, that is me!
So, I have been in the fortunate position of being able to help couples with rescheduling (one couple – 4 times!) without imposing any additional fees.
Some might say that is undervaluing my time, and in a way it is – I agree. But these are such unprecedented times, and with 4 kids of my own in pretty much the same demographic as those I marry, I really feel for them.
So for me, it’s a no-brainer. But I urge all affected couples to realise that the wedding professionals they are dealing with, also have mortgages to pay, food to put on the table, kids to educate, etc – you get the drift – so please don’t be too quick to judge or shame.
In the end, we ARE all in this together, and we just have to try and do the best we can, while maintaining our integrity and compassion.
Go well, until we see you all again on the flipside xox
